The San Joaquin County Board of Supervisors announced today that participating residents have saved more than $2.9 million with an average savings of 64.7 percent using its discount prescription card, Coast2Coast Rx. Since the free program launched in August 2010, the card has served as a source of income for the county with $1.25 generated for public programs for each prescription filled.
The multiple benefits of the program give card users the opportunity to better manage their health by having access to prescriptions that they might not otherwise be able to afford.
“The Coast2Coast Rx card allows us to serve the county in several ways—it gives residents access to discounted health care options, and the funds generated are put back into the community to further our programs and services for those in need,” said San Joaquin County Supervisor Carlos Villapudua.
The card can be a significant cost-saver for those without health insurance—and it can be equally as effective for those with insurance who have high deductibles or require a prescription not covered under their current plan. Consumers enjoy savings of up to 75 percent on more than 60,000 brand name and generic prescription drugs. In some instances the card can be used to offset the Medicare Part D “donut hole.” The free card is available to everyone with no enrollment and no restrictions on age or health status. The Yolo County Board of Supervisors announced today that its free discount prescription card, Coast2Coast Rx, has saved participating residents collectively $492,568 on prescriptions since it was inaugurated in August 2011. During this two-year period, participants have saved an average of 61.2 percent—with an impressive year-to-date average savings of 66.8 percent in 2013.
Adding to the value of the program is its revenue generating feature; the county receives $1.25 for each prescription filled using the card. Coast2Coast Rx—a free, comprehensive program for savings on thousands of prescriptions and additional health services—has no restrictions on age, health status or income. With no membership paperwork required, residents are immediately eligible to use the plan for all members of their family with no expiration date.
The Yolo County Health Department has made the card available to residents through community-based organizations and county offices. Revenue from the program has been allocated to serve the healthcare needs of Yolo County’s indigent population.

The San Diego County Board of Supervisors announced today that its free discount prescription card, Coast2Coast Rx, has saved residents who use the program more than $11.5 million by its two-year anniversary. Since its launch in June 2011, 37,759 participants have used the card to fill 223,212 prescriptions with an average savings to date of about 60 percent in San Diego County.
According to Supervisor Ron Roberts, San Diego County’s Coast2Coast Rx card has proven to be an important resource. It saves constituents up to 75 percent on prescription drugs, provides discounts on other health care services and helps to fund public health programs through the $1.35 payment generated each time a prescription is filled using the card.
“San Diego County is on track to meet the projected two year total amount of $295,000 in available revenue to support the County’s Live Well, San Diego initiative, a 10-year plan for healthy, safe and thriving communities,” stated Supervisor Roberts.
To date, these funds are being used to assist with the distribution, production and translation of educational and promotional health materials and referral resources targeted at under-insured and uninsured San Diego County residents for numerous programs including: 3-4-50 and 5-2-1-0. The educational initiatives are aimed at specific demographics; 3-4-50 attempts to change three behaviors—poor nutrition, physical inactivity, and tobacco use, which lead to four diseases that result in more than 50 percent of all deaths in San Diego County. They are the risk factors for heart disease, pulmonary disease, Type 2 diabetes, and cancer. The 5-2-1-0 campaign promotes four practices for diet and exercise that can be adopted daily by children and parents to improve overall health and avoid obesity.
Revenue is also supporting Body Mass Index (BMI) Measurement Toolkits for 44 San Diego County School Districts, which will serve as an evidence-based strategy for addressing obesity in children; a nicotine media campaign in the Central Region; and enhanced mapping of Central Region health and social services, allowing 2-1-1 San Diego to provide better information and referral services to disadvantaged communities.
“The Board of Supervisors is committed to providing quality services that are fiscally responsible—Coast2Coast Rx is such a program as demonstrated by its substantial and tangible impact in San Diego County in two short years,” said Supervisor Greg Cox, chairman of the San Diego County Board of Supervisors. “We believe the results will continue to grow as more residents learn about this free resource and the discounts available on prescriptions and other important health care services.”
No membership requirements or enrollment paperwork are needed for participation, and all consumers are eligible to use San Diego County’s Coast2Coast Rx card regardless of age, income or health status. Hennepin County has launched a partnership with a Florida company that could result in lower prescription and health care costs for residents and a benefit for selected county programs.
The no-cost Coast2Coast Rx card could provide savings of up to 75 percent on tens of thousands of prescriptions with additional savings available on health care services including diabetes supplies, services such as lab and imaging, and vision, dental and hearing care. The program also offers discounts on pet prescriptions and some veterinary care.
Each time the card is used to fill a prescription, $1.25 will be generated for public programs.
Residents can pick up a card from more than 69,000 participating pharmacies nationwide or print one from the Coast2Coast website, www.coast2coastrx.com/counties/mn/hennepin.
Participation has no restrictions on eligibility, so all residents are immediately qualified to use the card, regardless of their age, income or health status.
“Health care costs can place a burden on Hennepin County families,” said County Commissioner Randy Johnson. “We want to help make prescriptions more affordable.”
The program, provided through Financial Marketing Concepts, Inc., of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., can provide medical access to those with or without health insurance. For those who are uninsured or underinsured, it could provide access to the prescriptions and health care services that their families need. Even those with insurance can use the card to help offset the cost of high deductibles. In other cases the card could help relieve the out-of-pocket costs of the Medicare Part D ‘donut hole.’
The partnership creates no additional cost to the county and does not require additional work by county personnel to distribute or market the card. Neither card users nor the county bear any cost for participating in the program, and it requires no additional work from county personnel. In fact, as County Board Chairman Phillip B. Banaszek explained, the card actually generates revenue for public programs, as each time the card is used to fill a prescription the county receives $1.25 for public programs.

Mobile was the first among Alabama counties to adopt the program, which has since expanded to more than 40 counties statewide and earned the endorsement of the Association of County Commissions of Alabama.
